What’s not what most expecting moms realize is that you have more financial needs after giving birth. How can you cope with all these expenses if you have no other income source except your partner’s? Or worse, if you’re the breadwinner in the family.
Fortunately, SSS offers programs for expecting mothers. The government agency finances a duly filed claim for working moms who need to rest after giving birth. In other words, your lack of salary while on Maternity Leave will be the least of your concerns.

Meanwhile, miscarriage or emergency termination of pregnancy has 60 paid days. Lastly, a solo parent has an additional 15 days. This means that a single mother has 120 days of paid leave.
In addition, fathers also benefit from the added paid leaves. The seven days of paid maternity leave are transferrable. Your husband can enjoy more precious moments with your newborn.
The government elaborated on maternity leave under Republic Act No. 11210, causing a significant change. Before, it was only 60 days, but now it’s 105 days. The law is long and complicated, so here’s a simple summary of the key points.
Maternity Leave Benefits for All Women. Every pregnant woman is entitled to maternity leave benefits whether you’re married or not.
Leave After Job Termination. You can still claim maternity leave even if recently fired or terminated. However, your baby must be born, or your miscarriage must be within 15 days after you lose your job.
Leave Duration. The minimum leave is 60 days, but it can go up to 105 days.
PhilHealth Coverage. This applies to non-paying SSS. PhilHealth will offset your maternity leave.
Job Security. Your job is protected while you’re on maternity leave. You can’t be deposed just for taking an SSS maternity benefit leave.
Furthermore, the Expanded Maternity Leave Law extends your maternity leave as needed. Instead of the usual 60 days, you can take the full 105 days off. However, not all mothers want to use the full 105 days. Some prefer to return to work sooner because they can earn more money that way.
You can enjoy the SSS Maternity Benefit if you have everything to prove you’re qualified for it. Here is a list of what you must check before filing your claim.
To enjoy the SSS Maternity Benefit, you need to assess eligibility. You must present your expected delivery date. Your OB-Gyne will identify it, but you can compute it.
First, think back to the first day of your last menstrual cycle. Then, count back from that date until the 3 calendar months. Lastly, add up 1 year and 7 days to your expected due date.
For example, your last menstrual period was on July 15, 2021. If you count back three months from that date, it would be April 15, 2021. Afterward, add one year and seven days. Therefore, your expected delivery date is April 22, 2022.
Also, there is another way to calculate your expected due date. Use an online EDD calculator. You can also see the estimated EDD on your ultrasound report.
As long as you present the expected delivery date, you can qualify for the benefits of SSS Maternity.
With the expected delivery month, you can determine which quarter of the year you’d be in. A semester of contingency is two consecutive quarters. It helps decide whether or not you are eligible to receive the SSS Maternity Program.
How? SSS only covers pregnancy with paid contributions over the last 3 to 12 months before the contingency semester.
Look back to our sample of EDD. April 2022 is in the second quarter. Add another quarter before that. Then, your semester of contingency falls from January to June 2022. Therefore, the three monthly contributions must be paid from January to December 2021.
You can apply for the benefit if you have paid at least three (3) monthly contributions. Take note that it must be for the last 12 months before you have had a miscarriage or childbirth.
The calculation of the SSS benefit you will receive will come from the recent contributions you made. Therefore, your previous contributions from the earlier years won’t matter.
Also, you must notify SSS about your pregnancy as soon as possible. You can do this personally or through your employer (if employed).
Taking time before informing SSS might lead to delays. And you wouldn’t want that, right? You need to secure your finances before you give birth. That’s why tell SSS about it as soon as you learn you are pregnant.
You can secure your benefits from SSS if you have all the necessary documents. There are various classifications from which you can base your requirements. From there, you can prepare the documents needed accurately.
SSS Maternity Program requirements depend on the pregnant membership. Check which among these types of membership you fall.

Well, it depends. You must consider several factors, including your average daily salary and pregnancy condition.
You will get your average daily salary credit multiplied by 105 days.
You will get your average daily salary credit multiplied by 60 days.

Before going to any SSS branch or your HR Department, it is best to know how to calculate how much you will get from the SSS Maternity Benefits. Follow the tips below.
Identify how much you can get from the SSS Maternity Program using the semesters of SSS contingency.
You can check it by counting back from your LMP or the EDD from the ultrasound result.
The basis is on the day of delivery, childbirth, or miscarriage. To get the semester of contingency, you must know the quarter and semester. A quarter means the three (3) consecutive months ending in March, June, September, or December.
A semester means two (2) consecutive quarters ending on your possible delivery date.
It is Quarters 1 & 2, Quarters 2 & 3, Quarters 3 & 4, and Quarters 4 & 1.
Let’s say:
Your OB said you were giving birth in December 2018. Count the months backward to know your semester.
Therefore, your semester of contingency is from July 2018 to December 2018.
Take a look at the SSS Contingency Table.
Count 12 months backward, starting from the month before the semester of contingency.
Since your semester of contingency is from July 2018 to December 2018, count the months backward from June 2018 until you reach 12 months.
Your 12-month period is from July 2017 to June 2018.
Identify the six highest monthly salaries within these 12 months. Then, add them all up. It is your Monthly Salary Credit (MSC).
Let’s go back to the example:
From July 2017 to June 2018, find out how much your highest monthly salary is. Then, get the total of your six highest Monthly Salary Credits.
Take note that the maximum covered earnings or compensation is P16,000. So, even if your salary is higher, your total salary coverage remains at P16,000.
Assuming your six highest monthly salaries are P25,000 each. Then, SSS will only consider P16,000 as your highest MSC.
Then P16,000 + P16,000 + P16,000 + P16,000 + P16,000 + P16,000 =P96,000.
Your total MSC would be P96,000.
Divide the total MSC by 180 days to get the average daily salary credit. It is now your daily allowance.
P96,000 ÷ 180 = P533.33
Your daily maternity allowance would be P533.
Multiply the daily maternity allowance by 105 days (for normal delivery and cesarean section), 60 days (for miscarriage or emergency pregnancy termination), or 120 days (for solo parents).
It is the total of your SSS maternity benefit.
Example for:
Live birth delivery (normal or CS): P533 x 105 days = P55,965
Miscarriage: P533 x 60 days = P31,980
The solo parent: P533 x 120 days = P63,960

Unlike before, availing of the SSS Maternity Program is more convenient. You don’t have to visit your SSS branch right away. You can begin the journey of your SSS Maternity application online. Here’s how you can do it.
You can see your active membership via the official SSS website.
Count if you have at least three contributions within the 12 months before your semester of contingency. If you prefer to receive the maximum benefit amount, count six months worth the highest SSS contribution. Pay it online via the SSS website if you have no payments within this period.
Employed pregnant members must talk to their HR personnel so they can process the SSS maternity notification.
Pregnant members who are separated from work, self-employed, volunteers, OFWs, kasambahay, or non-working spouses must access their online SSS account. You may submit your maternity notification through the SSS mobile app or the SSS portal.
Important Reminder:
Starting September 2021, SSS branches will no longer accept walk-in applications. You must lodge first to apply for the SSS Maternity Benefits.

You can enroll for DAEM using your SSS online account. The DAEM is an online SSS system that permits members to register their preferred bank account, remittance pay-out company, or e-wallet as their disbursement account for any SSS benefit and loan proceeds.

If you’re a voluntary member of SSS, getting your maternity benefits works differently from those with employers. Here’s how you do it:
Step 1. Notify SSS Early. When you get your first ultrasound, inform the SSS immediately that you’re pregnant. You can do this by filing a Maternity Notification Form (Mat1). This form is available at SSS branches, or in a downloadable file from the SSS website.
Step 2. Submit Initial Requirements. Take the following documents to the nearest SSS branch:

Step 1. Find Your Monthly Salary Credits. Determine how much you’ve been paying to SSS each month. This amount determines your monthly salary credits.

Step 3. Multiply by the Number of Days. Multiply the average daily salary credit by the days you’re approved for maternity leave.
The result is your total maternity benefit. So, figuring out your SSS Maternity Benefit is all about knowing your salary credits. Without this vital detail, you’ll have difficulty determining the amount you’ll receive during your maternity leave.
Applying for SSS maternity benefits online is now possible starting in 2021.
Actively paying SSS members can maximize their contributions through SSS Maternity Benefits.
Step 1. Log in to My.SSS. Go to https://member.sss.gov.ph/. You can sign up for free if you don’t have an account.
Step 2. Navigate to E-services. Once logged in, find the “E-services” tab and click “Submit Maternity Benefit Application.”

No, employers cannot fire an employee because of the 105 days of maternity leave. The law protects you during this time. When you take maternity leave, your job is safe, and your employer must let you return to work after your leave is over.
